Oneida Nation Responds to NYS Court Injunction on Cigarette Tax LawA NYS Supreme Court judge issued a preliminary injunction restraining the state from enforcing a law to collect taxes on cigarettes sold by American Indian-owned business. Oneidas Brought Corn to Washington’s Starving Troops at Valley ForgeTwo hundred thirty-one years ago this month Colonial troops arrived at Valley Forge During the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington moved his troops to Valley Forge in Pennsylvania on Dec. 19, 1777. That winter was harsh and history reports that about 2,500 soldiers died. As allies of the colonists during the war, the Oneida Indian Nation carried their corn from their homelands about 300 miles to help alleviate the hunger of Washington’s starving troops during the winter of 1777-78. Oneida oral history reports that an Oneida woman, Polly Cooper, stayed behind after the corn was delivered to help the troops prepare the white corn which was different than the yellow corn the colonists were familiar with. Prior to bringing the corn to Valley Forge, the Oneidas fought at the Battles of Oriskany and Saratoga on the side of the colonists. Read more »

Health Fair features 75 Providers, 850 participateEach year, the Oneida Indian Nation sponsors its Annual Employee Health and Wellness Fair featuring informational displays from 75 local health, wellness and safety agencies and providers. This year’s event took place on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4th. Eight hundred sixty employees and their guests participated in the day-long event, held at The Nation’s Turning Stone Resort and Casino. Participants also had the opportunity to donate blood through the Red Cross Blood Drive, which exceeded its goals by collecting 49 pints, with seven donors achieving double red status. Local Family Receives Nation HelpThe Oneida Nation was among an “outpouring of community support” for the Harris Family noted in recent published reports in the Oneida Daily Dispatch. Donations, so far around $10,000, to help them build a new addition to the family home in Verona will provide an additional bedroom for their 12 year old son and play space for their three autistic children. That new addition will require the installation of a 400 amp electrical service entrance that will serve the family home and the barn. The Oneida Nation recently removed such a service from a building and has made an “in kind grant” to the Harris family saving them from having to use their recently donated building funds for this required upgrade. Raccoon & Crawfish Captures Festival Wins in Michigan and TennesseeThe Oneida Nation’s first 3D animated short, “Raccoon & Crawfish,” has captured two more film festival wins—bringing the total to 17. The latest wins come at the Secret City Film Festival in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and the Flint Film Festival in Flint, Mich. An ancient legend brought to life through 3D animation, the eight- minute short was produced by the Nation’s Four Directions Productions, a 3D animation/HD cinematography studio located on Nation lands near Sherrill, N.Y.
