Even
though its officers are rich in law enforcement experience, the
Oneida Nation Police Department continues to upgrade each officer's
skills through a rigorous, in-service training program that focuses
on professional development in the fields of law and physical
fitness. To accomplish this, the Oneida Nation Police Department
has a full-time training coordinator and certified physical fitness
instructors.
Oneida
Nation police officers are involved in at least 40 hours of in-service
training each year. This ranges from proficiency in firearms to
community policing concepts, cultural sensitivity, leadership,
ethics, and physical fitness. This training is done by state certified
master instructors, whose goal is to have the officers of the
Oneida Nation Police Department exceed all federal and state training
standards.
State-of-the-art
equipment and opportunities include computer-based training; operation
of a fully encrypted multi-channel inter-agency radio system;
and E-911 capabilities.
Oneida
Nation police officers must comply with valid job-related physical
standards and are required to go through semiannual fitness testing.
Testaments to their fitness are the numerous medals they have
won in the demanding events of the International and New York
State Police Olympics.
