Museum Quality Corn Husk Dolls These are the work of the beloved elder craftperson, Emily Johnson. These particular dolls are from the collection of Gloria Halbritter, who made the outfits. The illustrate the skill and attention to detail which mark them as being of museum quality craftwork.

Child's Corn Husk Dolls These dolls illustrate a sometimes forgotten aspect of our culture - that it is a living culture. These were not constructed as museum pieces, rather they are the work of a loving elder for her grand-niece. These dolls helped to bring to life the imagination of an Oneida child. Note that the child drew a face upon her favorite, the male doll, despite the tradition that it ought to have remained faceless. Made around 1955, these were donated by Rebecca Johns Karst.

Shako:wi is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. almost every day of the year. It is closed on holidays including American Indian Day (the Friday before Labor Day). Group tours by prearrangement. There is no admission fee. All Iroquois Gift Shop on the premises.

Located on Nation lands about 35 miles east of Syracuse, NY, Shako:wi is a focal point for the culture and history of the Oneida People.
